Hi,

What options are available with regards to overlay materials if one would want to incorporate a GlidePoint Gamepad such as TM035035 in a more rugged design? I.e. is metal such as a steel or aluminun alloy an option?

In addition, would it be possible to use a thicker glove with the aforementioned device, especially with a more rugged overlay?

Thanks!

Hi Johan,

Thanks for your question! The capacitive sensing system can't have any sort of conductive material on top of the sensor, so metal wouldn't work. Thicker plastics are generally ok, as long as they don't have any carbon in them (again, can't have anything conductive).

We can tune our sensitivity for thicker gloves and overlays. We have designed touch sensors designed to work with thick gloves. Careful tuning is required to make sure everything works well. Can you share more details about your application?

Hi Ethan,

Thanks for your prompt reply. The pad would serve as a replacement  for multiple switches or buttons in a small area, where gesture control would give the equivalent functionality in a more intuitive way, with the possibility to reassign an introduce additional gestures without the need to add, remove or relocate physical buttons or switches.

The application as a whole is an HMI for controlling machinery in rough environments. While the device is to be installed inside a cabin, the operator may or may not use gloves of different thicknesses depending on environmental conditions.

I get the impression that such fine tuning is done once, can not be automated or done on the fly, and will thus require the operator to always use gloves of a certain thickness?

Johan,

There are some settings which adjust automatically on the fly, but these are typically related to environmental compensation. Sensitivity is typically a fixed value, although there is some adjustment possible in the firmware.

We have done applications before where both gloves and fingers can be sensed, but there may be some tradeoffs. I would recommend setting up a call with our sales and engineering team to talk more about your application if you would like more detail. Let me know if I can help with that.
